Annual Dinner with Sonoma County Supervisor Shirlee Zane

Shirlee ZaneShirlee Zane is a great example of one of those local officials. She has over 25 years of experience working in health and human services as a family therapist, minister, hospital chaplain, special education educator and inner city social worker. Prior to her election to the Board of Supervisors, she served from 1999-2008 as the CEO for the Council on Aging and thus must surely have a place in her heart for us Oakmonters.

As a County Supervisor, Ms. Zane is charged with the responsibility of establishing policy to guide the various functions of the county and, where necessary, to establish procedures by which functions are performed. In this time of economic crisis, the challenges are enormous. Ms. Zane will address how the Board of Supervisors is dealing with the significant budget shortfall.

Oakmont Market will serve dinner with a choice of three entrees: vegetarian, chicken marsala, or baked salmon. Dinner will include appetizers, salad, dessert, and coffee or tea.

Wednesday, Septermber 1, 7:00 PM, at the East Recreation Center.

Cuba and Other Central and South American Problems and Solutions

Tony White

It seems that sometimes we are so focused on Afghanistan that we're not mindful of things going on just south of our border. Dr. Tony White is exactly the person to bring issues like these to our attention.

Dr. White is Professor Emeritus at Sonoma State University where he taught Latin American History and Global Studies for 37 years. He has taught courses for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at both Sonoma State and Dominican University. Dr. White led three education trips to Cuba through SSU's Extended Education Program and is planning another group trip to Cuba in December. His biography of the Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, Siqueiros, Revolutionary Mexican Artist, was published last year.
